Northeast Indiana Spelling Contest Won by Concordia Concordia Lutheran hosted the fourth annual Northeast Indiana Lutheran Schools Spelling Contest on Monday, March 15. Students from Concordia and seven other schools from the northern division competed for grade level and school level championships. A south division contest was being hosted simultaneously by Lutheran South Unity School. Concordia won the 8th and 7th grade contests and placed second in 3rd (in a tiebreaker), 4th (in a three way second place tie), 5th and 6th (in a tiebreaker) which allowed them to capture the overall team championship. The spelling contest was begun in an effort to reward academic achievement and to build unity and fellowship among the nineteen Lutheran schools in northeast Indiana. The contest differs from a spelling bee in that competitors continue to spell even if a word is missed and the teams are evaluated on the total number of words spelled correctly. In its first two years the contest featured Lutheran schools primarily from outside the Fort Wayne city limits. Last year, the contest expanded to include all area schools and the two division system was created. Concordia's spellers: 3rd Savannah Smallwood Emma Rekeweg 4th Avery Honeick Heather Mitchell 5th Kyla Macaraig Raymond Truong 6th Shrina Patel Abby Murphy 7th Hwapyung Yoo Judy Truong 8th Nick Yergens Jonathan NaThalang Concordia captured the north division crown in 2009 and St. John - Kendallville was the runner-up. Concordia was the overall champion in 2007 and 2008 as well.
